Arranged for trombone and harp by Achilles Liamakopoulos and Coline-Marie Orliac

Johann Ernst Galliard (1687-1749) was born in Germany and eventually settled in
London, joining its rich musical and social life. He was a popular composer, writing a
wide variety of music and was an accomplished oboe player, playing at the Royal
Italian Opera under Handel.

This sonata is one of six he composed for bassoon or cello and lends itself perfectly
to adaptation for ftombone. This new edition for ûombone and harp, made by
Achilles Liarmakopoulos and Coline-Marie Orliac (Duo hArT), well demonstrates the
suitability of these two instruments as an ensemble, while allowing the sonata's
performance by any bass clef instrument.

Galliard's first sonata should be played lightly, as with much solo chamber music; the
dynamics are for guidance only (as are the metronome markings), though they have
been found to provide a credible balance in performance.

It is hoped that the presence of embellishments will not deter younger players: they
should not be ignored and could be substituted temporarily with accents, or similar
emphasis; indeed, the trombonist is at liberty to add more embellishments, though the
performer should be guided by specialist advice or standard works on the subject.
